REVIEW: KISS OF MIDNIGHT by LARA ADRIAN

Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian
Before starting my review I admit….. upfront…that……..I AM THE ULTIMATE FAN OF JR WARD’S BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD SERIES….finishing her latest book, LOVER UNLEASHED, and in limbo waiting for her next book which will be released in March 2012, I looked around for some books in same genre that I could read in the meantime.
Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian was recommended so decided it to give it a try. I also read a few reviews about this book, mostly good but the one thing that kept coming up was how similar it is the JR WARD’s BDB series. Yes, there are similarities but there are a few differences which make it an enjoyable read, even for those die-hard BDB fans out there!!!!!!! It’s well-written, dark, sexy, edgy, with great irresistible characters…loved Lucan and Rio and the Breedmates…betrayal, action, sacrifice, loyalty and lots steamy sex – your good para-normal romance.
This is the first book in Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed Series….so did I like it???? Yes I did….
Here are some of my thoughts about this book:
-this is the story of Lucan Thorne, an ancient Breed Warrior, descendant from male vampire aliens ---a different and interesting take on vampires!!! - who mated with human women, and Gabrielle Maxwell, a photographer who has always felt disconnected with the world. When they meet, both feel an instant powerful connection.
-this book did remind me of JR WARD’s DARK LOVER – Lucan is a lot like Wrath….both are dark, sensual and strong ancient warriors dedicated to protecting his people. Gabrielle very like Beth…feisty, intense, caring and an unconditional love for her man. However, Gabrielle, is human and has the mark of a Breedmate, they are the only women that the male vampires can mate and have children with….only male vampires are born……these women remain human and the exchange of blood between a Breed male will keep them young forever.
-the Breed Warriors , gorgeous strong guys wear black leather (yes like the BDB brothers!!!), enjoy kicking ass and killing off the Rogues – once vampires who have crossed over to the dark side when they are unable to control their Bloodlust (something like the Lessers but geez these brutes are something else….with their long long fangs…scary as hell!!)
-Yes the Warriors live in their own, hidden from human eyes mansion…just this one is underground…..but there are the black candles, etc etc… sounds like a great place to live!!!!
-The Warriors live amongst each other and there is not much interaction with humans…apart from one here and there…I liked Gabrielle’s friend Jamie….great character. Wonder if he will appear in the next books????
-Lots of violent scenes….the fights between the Warriors and the Rogues are brutal, the feeding scenes…bloody and ugly…even when we see Lucan feeding….not surprising that Gabrielle felt scared and disturbed when she first saw Lucan drinking blood from a human.
-Liked the intensity of Lucan and Gabrielle’s relationship. Hot….Caring…the scene where Gabrielle is caring for Lucan when he is seriously injured from a fight with the Rogues is so amazing….threading her fingers through his hair, holding his head on her lap….I could feel her tenderness towards Lucan.
As a hard core BDB reader, I could still enjoy this book. I am going to read the next two books in the series soon. After all, what else can I do …as I wait anxiously, impatiently for my next BDB LOVER REBORN to come out!!!!!!!!!!! BDB’s out there…don’t be put off by the similarities….read another good series about the world of vampires!!!!!!
Book Overview by Barnes & Noble
He watches her from across the crowded dance club, a sensual black-haired stranger who stirs Gabrielle Maxwell’s deepest fantasies. But nothing about this night—or this man—is what it seems. For when Gabrielle witnesses a murder outside the club, reality shifts into something dark and deadly. In that shattering instant she is thrust into a realm she never knew existed—a realm where vampires stalk the shadows and a blood war is set to ignite.

Lucan Thorne despises the violence carried out by his lawless brethren. A vampire himself, Lucan is a Breed warrior, sworn to protect his kind—and the unwitting humans existing alongside them—from the mounting threat of the Rogues. Lucan cannot risk binding himself to a mortal woman, but when Gabrielle is targeted by his enemies, he has no choice but to bring her into the dark underworld he commands.

Here, in the arms of the Breed’s formidable leader, Gabrielle will confront an extraordinary destiny of danger, seduction, and the darkest pleasures of all. . . .

REVIEW: 12 POINT GUIDE TO WRITING ROMANCE by KATE WALKER

Kate Walker's 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance (Aber Writers Guides)
I have been a fan of Kate Walker for years and have read most of her books. She’s been writing romance novels for Harlequin and Mills and Boons for years and she has a lot of information and tips for writers and wanna be writers…like me…..

This book was recommended when I did a writers course - for mills and boon writers…yes I kid you not!!!!

This book is informative, very well written and easy to read.
The information is broken into chapters - each dealing with a different subject and at the end of each chapter there is a section of questions and exercises for one to do...

The last chapter includes articles by other romance writers who share their experiences and offer advice.

A must for all writers who want to know more about writing romance. It’s the best guide to writing a romance

REVIEW: SHADOWS AT SUNSET by ANNE STUART

Shadows At Sunset by Anne Stuart
Continuing on my Anne Stuart moment, I began reading Shadows at Sunset, another one of my ever favorite books by this author. She has such an incredible way of writing…she pulls you in and you are hooked….you have to finish the book…you have to know what happens next….

From the first page you are drawn into the story of Coltrane and Jilly, the daughter of one of the most odious men in Hollywood.
Coltrane is Jilly’s father’s lawyer and he has an hidden agenda….bent on destroying the Meyer family to revenge his mother’s death which he discovered is linked to the family and the house La Casa de Sombras , where Jilly lives with her adopted sister Rachel-Ann and her younger brother.
Coltrane works on moving into the Hollywood crumbling mansion which is filled with dark secrets, scandals and even a ghost or two that roam around the house.

Coltrane is a hard man with dark secrets of his own and Jilly, who loves and feels responsible for her siblings and will do anything to keep them away from their wicked and evil father is at first wary of Coltrane. He is not the man she wants…she wants someone who will love her for herself…but slowly she begins to see beneath Coltrane’s façade…their romance begins with them getting to know each other and slowly grows into love….the sex scenes…are really hot here.

The secondary story of Rachel-Ann’s love story is so sweet and warm. She is such a gorgeous and beautiful woman. It warmed my heart knowing she finally found her happiness.

There are lots of unexpected twists and shocking secrets are revealed that you leave you stunned. There’s so much mystery, romance, great characters…FABULOUS, INTRIGUING, COMPELLING…ENTHRALLING…
I was really so happy that Coltrane and Jilly finally find happiness and love together.

This story will leave you thinking about it for a long time. You will want to read it over and over again.
This is one book you just have to read.

REVIEW: RITUAL SINS by ANNE STUART

Ritual Sins by Anne Stuart
I love Anne Stuart’s books and have been reading them for years and Dark Rituals is one of my most favorites…I have read it over and over again…I always go back to my bookshelf and pick it up at least once a year. So being on my Anne Stuart mode, I began with this book.

It’s such a great book – so well written. I couldn’t put it down once I began page 1. Her heroes are always dark, sexy, powerful and totally on their own mission…nothing and no one will stand in their way…..but she always find some way for them to redeem themselves at the end. Luke Bardell is one such alpha male. He’s a man with loads of baggage who is the leader of a kind of Jones cult, of which Rachel Connery’s mother is a follower of and has suddenly died of cancer whilst in the cult’s camp.

Rachel believes that her mother has been murdered by the cult for her money and she is determined to find the truth and destroy the cult.
There are so many twists and turns and you are kept in suspense with each page you read.
Luke thinks Rachel is not is type of woman but he’s prepared to seduce her and get her away from him and the camp before she ruins his master plan. But as grow closer together, both are unable to deny their feelings for each other.

The end leaves you stunned. Absolutely unexpected.
I was so happy that both of them realized that the love for each other could overcome all their past pain and suffering and finally find happiness together.

I will definitely read this book again…loved it…unforgettable….thought provoking…Anne Stuart is a fantastic story teller.

BOOK REVIEW: INFINITY by SHERRILYN KENYON

Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon

I wasn’t sure what to expect of this book when I started reading it. I picked it up because it was one of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s books I had not read and also that it featured Nick Gautier one of my favorite characters in the Dark Hunter Series and did not realized it dealt with Nick’s life as a teenager before he met any Dark Hunters.

I liked finding out about his past, the close relationship he has with his stripper mother, the difficulties in trying to fit in at school, his courage and the moral code he lives by where he recognizes the difference between right and wrong, good and evil. He’s a really great character…streetwise, sarcastic and great sense of humor…  He soon discovers that there is a world out there that is dangerous and filled with bad things.
His life is filled with new friends – that he tries hiding from his mother…being grounded by her will not be a good option.

I loved seeing all those characters I have read in the Dark Hunter Series – Acheron (my most favorite of all the DH), Simi, Ash’s little demon who never goes anywhere without her BBQ sauce, Kyrian (Nick’s new boss!!), Tabitha….now I know how they met and how Nick comes into the DH books.
There’s lots of action, violence and I am sure that male y/a will have a blast reading this series….there’s no romance in this story…okay Nick does have a crush on some girl….but it’s really all about his teen life…

The amount of characters we meet in the book will probably confuse some new readers but I am sure that the continuing books in this series will have more information on them.
I enjoyed reading it and am looking forward to the next book.

Book Overview by Barnes and Noble:
At fourteen, Nick Gautier thinks he knows everything about the world around him. Streetwise, tough and savvy, his quick sarcasm is the stuff of legends. . .until the night when his best friends try to kill him. Saved by a mysterious warrior who has more fighting skills than Chuck Norris, Nick is sucked into the realm of the Dark-Hunters: immortal vampire slayers who risk everything to save humanity.
Nick quickly learns that the human world is only a veil for a much larger and more dangerous one: a world where the captain of the football team is a werewolf and the girl he has a crush on goes out at night to stake the undead.
But before he can even learn the rules of this new world, his fellow students are turning into flesh eating zombies. And he’s next on the menu.
As if starting high school isn't hard enough. . .now Nick has to hide his new friends from his mom, his chainsaw from the principal, and keep the zombies and the demon Simi from eating his brains, all without getting grounded or suspended. How in the world is he supposed to do that?

REVIEW: ICE SERIES (Books 1-4) by ANNE STUART

This is a great series by Anne Stuart, one of my favourite authors of Romance/Suspense. I love her books and the Ice Series is one of my favourites.

BOOK #1
Black Ice (Ice, #1)

I am a huge fan of Anne Stuart and have read all her books over and over again.  And I love her Ice Series, Black Ice is the first book in the series and it’s a dark, non-stop action suspense story of Chloe Underwood, an American working in Paris as a children’s book translator, yearning for some excitement and sex in her rather boring life and Bastien Toussaint, a ruthless, sexy undercover spy for the mysterious Committee.

Chloe’s best friend and roommate, Sophie begs her to take her place as a translator for a group of businessmen.  The pay is really good, she can spend the weekend in the countryside and it could bring some excitement into her life which finally persuades her in agreeing to the scheme.

But once she arrives at the amazing chateau in the countryside, Chloe meets all the participants, which include Bastien, who is feels very attracted to and being an observant and intelligent person she soon begins realizing that something is not quite right about the people and the place.

Plot is filled with twists and turns. Dangerous arm-dealers, ruthless killers, betrayal and we are propelled into the dark and dangerous world that Chloe has unknowably found herself in.
Bastien is not sure if Chloe is an innocent pawn in the game or part of the plan to break him down ….he is trying to infiltrate and destroy the cartel. She feels his interest in her which she cannot understand why  and as the story progresses both are unable to stop the heat and lust and romance  growing between them. The sex scenes are hot, sensual and so so sexy…..

Bastien is a loner, always lived alone and has no feelings for anyone. All that matters to him is to finish the assignment and move onto the next one. But for the first time in his life he begins to care for someone….he is unable to stop his feelings for the naïve Chloe.

I loved Bastien…hard, cold but with a heart beating under all the darkness in him. Putting his life on the line for someone he loves. And Chloe is really a cute heroine….loved that they got together finding love at last.
Just wished the ending had not been so….quick, abrupt….but I know their story will continue in the next book…which I am looking forward to so much.

I have read this series 4 times and each time I am drawn into Anne Stuart’s tautly written romantic suspense novels. Her heroes are always dark, gorgeous men that find redemption in the end.

BOOK #2

Cold As Ice (Ice, #2)

Cold as Ice  is the 2nd book in Anne Stuart’s Ice Series and I loved reading it as much as I did the previous 4 times  It’s another suspense story about the members of the mysterious “Committee, a group of secret cold, jaded, emotionless agents whose only aim is to finish the job they have set out to do including killing the enemies.

I loved Genevieve  Spencer, a fast talking, feisty lawyer who just wants to get her job done – board billionaire Harry van Dorn’s yacht in Costa Rica, get him to sign the papers she is carrying and get back to Manhattan as quickly as possible. But this is not going to be as simple as she thinks. She discovers that he’s an evil, sick playboy who decides to use and abuse her and then kill her when he tires of her. Genevieve knows she has to use her wits to keep herself alive – there is nobody on this yacht that can save her.

Peter Jensen is the billionaire’s personal assistance. I felt no interest in him….he was so bland that you almost forget he was there. But this was just the ploy he used to keep his true identity….an agent sent to destroy Harry van Doorn and his evil empire of which the world had no idea existed. But he kind of grew on me….he’s the usual cold and deadly hero like Bastien Toussaint from the previous book Black Ice, prepared to kill Genevieve as a means to save the operation. He’s really an emotionless man…who uses sex and his body to seduce both men and women as long as he gets the job finished.

The chemistry between the two is great… Chloe is unable to resist Peter…..and he begins to discover that sex with her is so far different from the way he has always used sex in his life.
Bastien Toussaint makes an appearance….yay…and also a new character is introduced….Takashi O’Brien…..which we will get to know in the next book in this series I am sure…..

I love every book that Anne Stuart has written and read them many times and I am never ever bored.

The Book Description:
The job was supposed to be dead easy -- hand-deliver some legal papers to billionaire philanthropist Harry Van Dorn's extravagant yacht, get his signature and be done. But Manhattan lawyer Genevieve Spenser soon realizes she's in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that the publicly benevolent playboy has a sick, vicious side. As he tries to make her his plaything for the evening, eager to use and abuse her until he discards her with the rest of his victims, Genevieve must keep her wits if she intends to survive the night.
But there's someone else on the ship who knows the true depths of Van Dorn's evil. Peter Jensen is far more than the unassuming personal assistant he pretends to be -- he's a secret operative who will stop at nothing to ensure Harry's deadly Rule of Seven terror campaign dies with him. But Genevieve's presence has thrown a wrench into his plans, and now he must decide whether to risk his mission to keep her alive, or allow her to become collateral damage . . .

BOOK #3
Ice Blue (Ice, #3)
Ice Blue, 3rd book in Anne Stuart’s Ice Series continues the story of the mysterious Committee agents and it is just as suspenseful and romantic as the previous two books…which I ABSOLUTELY LOVED…and this one is just as amazing.
Summer Hawthorne’s mother, a rich and spoilt woman who has never cared or loved her had been under the influence of an evil Japanese cult and had promised them the priceless blue bowl, that had been given to Summer by her beloved Japanese nanny. They are determined to get the bowl by any means as it has incredible powers unbeknown to Summer.

Takashi O’Brien is a half American/Japanese (he also belongs to the Yakuza – Japanese Mafia…love those tattoos!!!!) and his  mission is to get, by whatever means it requires even if having to seduce or kill summer -  the bowl before it gets into the cult’s hands – it’s a very powerful relic which could destroy the world.

Summer has a lot of issues which she has to resolve before she can move forward in the growing relationship with the sexy, mysterious, dangerous Takara, who I really loved. He’s such an interesting character…and the secondary characters are very cool….especially Reno, his cousin who will get his own story soon….the scenes in Japan are fabulous….compelling family secrets…

This is a great suspenseful story in the series that take you on a roller coast filled with action, romance and much more
Fabulous read. Can’t wait for the next book.

The Book Description:
Museum curator Summer Hawthorne considered the exquisite ice-blue ceramic bowl given to her by her beloved Japanese nanny a treasure of sentimental value—until somebody tried to kill her for it.
The priceless relic is about to ignite a global power struggle that must be stopped at all costs. It's a desperate situation, and international operative Takashi O'Brien has received his directive: everybody is expendable. Everybody. Especially the woman who is getting dangerously under his skin as the lethal game crosses the Pacific to the remote and beautiful mountains of Japan, where the truth can be as seductive as it is deadly….

BOOK #4

Ice Storm (Ice, #4)
Ice Storm, the next installment in the Ice Series is about Isobel Lambert, the cold as ice, beautiful and dangerous head of the Committee, the organization working at saving the world from evil and corruption. She has never let anything stand in her mission even killing the man she loved .

She has been sent on a mission to bring in Serafin known as the butcher who has traded his life for inside information he has .
There are a lot of twists and turns in this story which keep you turning page after page…..I couldn’t put it down until I read the last page.

Serafin, Isobel discovers is actually Killian, a man she had an affair seventeen years ago and had left for dead. She discovers she still has intense feelings for him even though she knows he is evil and a traitor and can betray her at any time without any thought for her. Their sexual chemistry is still as hot as it was years ago.
Both realize that there is someone in the agency that could be a double agent…but who???? Their journey to discover the betrayer leads them through a lot of obstacles and the climax is pretty awesome.

There’s lots of action, spies, murder and much much more.
I loved Isobel…strong but at same time showing compassion and love. I was so happy that they both find each other.
Liked reading about the previous characters…and how far they have come….

Great book in the series….Isobel is one of my favorite heroines so far!!!!!
I can't wait for book 5 in this series!!!!!

The Book Description:
Behind her mask is a deadly secret?
The powerful head of the covert mercenary organization The Committee, Isobel Lambert is a sleek, sophisticated professional who comes into contact with some of the most dangerous people in the world. But beneath Isobel's cool exterior a ghost exists, haunting her with memories of another life? a life that ended long ago.
But Isobel's past and present are about to collide when Serafin, mercenary, assassin and the most dangerous man in the world, makes a deal with The Committee. Seventeen years ago Isobel shot him and left him for dead. Now it looks as if he's tracked her down for revenge. But Isobel knows all too well that looks can be deceiving? And that's what she's counting on to keep her cover in this international masquerade of murder.

REVIEW: DARK PERIL by CHRISTINE FEEHAN

Dark Peril by Christine Feehan
I am a fan of all Christine Feehan’s books – I have her whole series collection in my bookcase – The Drake Sisters, Sisters of the Heart, Ghostwalkers, Leopard Series and my most favorite the Dark Series.

I look forward to every book that comes out and I was over the moon when Dark Peril came out…which continued the story of Dominic a Carpathian from the Dragonseeker, bloodline, who had in the climax ending of Dark Slayer ingested tainted vampire blood which would identify him as a vampire to enable him infiltrate the vampire camp to find what their plan against the Carpathians and pass the information to the Prince. It was basically a suicide mission but Dominic was tired of not being able to see in colors and feel any emotions and giving up ever finding his lifemate so this would be something he could do for his people before he went into the light to die.

I was so excited that the first thing I did when I arrived home was to open the first page…but halfway through the book my interest began to wane….horrors of horrors…I even skipped some pages….What was going on???? Chapter I thought…where is this story going????

Okay this is Dominic and Solange Sangria, a jaguar shape shifter living in the jungles of Brazil who appeared in previous books – she’s the cousin of Juliette who is Riordan de la Cruz’s lifemate. She's a strong, scarred and fights to save the lives of other jaguar women that are being relentlessly tortured and killed by the jaguar men led by her father Broderick Sangria, the cruel and evil royal blooded jaguar who had killer her entire family when she was a young girl. She is determined in her quest to kill him even if it means her death.

Both have been sharing dreams of each other and never believed that either existed. When they finally meet Dominic realizes that he at long lost has found his lifemate….but can they ever be together…after all he knows his going into his death when he completes his mission. Will they overcome their obstacles and find true love and their HEA??

What did I like about it?
*I admired Solange’s bravery and strength and how she wanted to save the jaguar women. Not afraid to face the obstacles in her life
*How she gained the confidence in her femininity….she had always seen herself as a women who cared nothing about her soft and gentle side
*Having felt distrust and almost a hatred for men she begins to realize that not all men are like the cruel and wicked jaguar men and vampires she has encountered in her life
*She has a sense of humor…fun!!!!! Dominic does not want to make love to her…she’s tired of being a virgin….because he’s afraid his tainted blood may hurt her…so what does she think up???? Find him a condom…..and I can finally discover what sex is really like!!!!! And her love for the dragonseeker robe that suddenly materialized out of nowhere….thanks to Dominic’s magic of course!!!!!
*Giving her blood to Zacarias de la Cruz, the brother of her cousin’s lifemate Riordan…that scene is absolutely awesome….the courage she has when she tries to help Zacharias as he dangerously get so so close to changing into a vampire….offering him her love and with her words and almost a sense of love which brings him back to reality. Incredible
*Love Zacharias de la Cruz…can’t wait for his story….I wonder if Margareta, the human who is attacked by the vampires and is near death is to be his lifemate. I hope so…
*The jungle settings are really fabulous. Their steamy cave deep in the jungle, where they spend most of their time…
*Ah…a mention of Josef….that crazy teen from Dark Symphony….I wondered when he would appear again…alas only a mention…he’s the hacker who will destroy all the vampire Intel after Dominic sends him the details and plans…I hope he appears in future books.
*The
*Amazing ending…..not going to spoil it for those who have not read the book…but it’s totally unexpected….I 'm sure we will hear more about this phenomena ….BUT………….

And what didn’t I like about it?
*Most of the book is about their relationship…which in itself not a bad thing…but it just went on and on…”No I can’t make you my lifemate…it’s too dangerous…”I want to do it with you” ….”Such a beautiful man”…..”I can’t let him see my body….it’s so ugly…I am not feminine enough for him”,, and on and on….too much repetition.

*Most of the book takes place in the cave and there is not much about the secondary characters….a few pages of fighting the jaguars, killing some vampires and then back to the cave. I would have liked more interaction with characters like Mary Anne, Manolito de la Cruz’s lifemate who I fell in love with in Dark Possession, more of Juliette and her sister Jasmine. Just a few scenes with the jaguar people and Zacarias de la Cruz. I love meeting up with the characters I have met in previous books but here it’s all about Dominic and Solange. Most of the story focus on them and everything else is a quick scene which occurs for a short time and then….you’re back in the cave…and the two of them again!!! The story felt rushed…no real build-up to anything.

*The ending….it kind of ends suddenly…..they kill off the vampires, she begs him to save a possessed kitten…and voila…suddenly next page…THE END!!!!!

*The fact that Dominic had the tainted parasitic blood in him and he was bent on finishing his quest , it was almost forgotten during most of the book….I did not sense the importance of him sacrificing himself….once he meets his lifemate…that’s it…..nothing else matters.
*Loved the cover….gorgeous male….even though that’s not how I pictured Dominic in my head.
I am not saying this is a bad book…..it’s just not one of my favorites in this series and I don’t think I will read it again…well maybe in a few years to come….not like I have read some of the previous books 3 or 4 times….

So…am I going to buy the next book? Of course!!!! The Carpathians are part of my family and I will continue reading the next books that are published. Christine Feehan is a brilliant writer with an incredible imagination and style and I will continue building up my library with her future books.
