There’s something about Karina Halle’s writing that astonishes me every time I read one of her books.
I became a die-hard fan after reading her Artists Trilogy and was excited that Javier Bernal would have his own book. He was a character I wanted to know more about….and in Dirty Angels we certainly do…and nothing that I expected!!
I kept asking myself how it was possible that I was faced with a story filled with darkness, depraved and evil characters, brutality, evil, violence and still managed to find something good and beautiful in it as well!!!!
How could I feel anything but dislike for someone like Javier Bernal? – A drug lord, a killer who likes to torture his enemies by cutting off their hands and feet and then squeezing their heads with a wrench!! Someone who forces a defenseless woman to undress, get down on her knees and proceed to come all over her back!!!! Can anyone be more depraved than that? How could someone like him ever redeem himself? Yet, there was a part inside him that grabbed me…a hope that there was a good soul beneath all that depravity…..
Luiza Chavez’s character development was absolutely amazing. She goes from being a good, caring and moral person to someone almost unrecognizable at the end. What she endures in the hands of depraved men is inconceivable and to see her strength and courage is truly admirable…
Married to a sadist and kidnapped by her husband’s rival drug cartel, led by Javier, she continues being abused, tortured….even having Javier’s name carved on her back with a knife…broken physically but not her spirit…
She would endure pain, rape, violence but she would never give up being free from this depraved world around her….
What I found interesting was that Javier, supposedly the strong and feared drug lord finds himself not in control. With Luiza, he sees a possibility in having someone loving you, despite your flaws and weaknesses….
This is not a sweet and cute love story. It’s a gritty, dark, provocative, unconventional tale that absolutely grabs you from the first page.
And still the author managed to surprise me with the ending of the story……..did I ever expect that??? Not at all!!
You may be shocked, stunned, freaked out, angry, disturbed….you want hearts and all…no you won’t get that here…you will get something more than that!!!
The HEA boundaries are blown away in this story and it’s so worth delving into something so very different and unexpected.
