Review: The Only Woman to Defy Him by Carol Marinelli

The Only Woman to Defy HimThe Only Woman to Defy Him by Carol Marinelli
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Demyan Zukov His life in Russia had been hard and atrocious and from age five he looked after his mother..cleaned car windows, begged in the streets ….looked for food in garbage thrown out from restaurants. At 14, after the death of his mother, he’s taken away to live with an aunt living in Australia, vowing never to return to Russia.
After university, he works hard and becomes a zillionaire (I don’t remember how he made those millions….).

He’s going through a rather tough time – his ex-wife is getting married and has told him she’s taking their 14 year old son back to Russia – her new husband is Russian as well….she’s something like Russian/Australian so I guess she loves those] Russkiye muzhchiny..that’s Russian men!!! See how good I am that I give you the translation????????

I found the hero totally unlikeable and I saw nothing in him that I could ever think he could be redeemed. Selfish, self-absorbed, self-centered…..and I don’t care if he’s a zillionaire – that he thinks the world has to open up to his requests.

Alina Ritchie, wanted to be a painter but when he mother lost her flower farm became a pa even though she has no talent for that position whatsoever. She’s no willowy Helen of Troy…she’s a country gal at heart with a hearty appetite thus her clothes fitting very tightly over her well-downed body (Demyan describing Alina At first, he hadn’t recognized her. He’d been far too busy admiring a bottom and tanned, freckled, rather heavy legs, and then Alina had turned around and he’d realized they belonged to her.”….. I think that she also doesn’t have designer clothes at this stage…. and blushes at everything!!!

She’s hired as Demyan’s temporary PA….naturally, she has no clue about the duties entailing that position but she needs the money…don’t we all.

Despite Demyan’s despicable behavior, she falls so totally in love with him. And Demyan………remember he likes sexy and willowy “loose” women and only does one night stands…but…wait, let me close my mouth..because this is what I looked like when he thinks that he would like to do Alina.

He asks Alina to go with him to a charity event……..
“When we arrive, do I-?”
“I arrive,” Demyan said. “you will go in separately. I am a single man, Alina. You don’t want to ruin my chances, now, do you?”

He leaves Sydney to follow his son to Russia – no goodbye to Alina – instead he sends his driver to her apartment with this message:
“Mr Zukov has asked for the return of any keys and also the elevator pass”

Demyan takes ALPHA-MALES to new heights and not the ones I like to see in my heroes!!!!! How Alina possibly even give this guy a chance???? Even for (view spoiler)

I like, very much, the new hot, sensual and sexy scenes written in the latest M&B books, but honestly, there was something so NOT sexy about the two mc’s “couplings”
The lovely weight of Demyan was over her, his thigh nudging her legs apart.
“How much will it hurt?”
“How the hell would I know?”
She didn’t have time to ponder his words. Alina assumed it was a factious quip.
It wasn’t.
Demyan had never bedded a less than knowing woman and had never made love unsheathed.

Demyan could only admire her stoicism because he felt the tear and the brief jolt of shock run through her body at his invasion, then he did what he’d fought not to, he lost himself in the sensations as he inched further in.
“You’ll get used to it soon.”
“I don’t want to get used to it,”Alina whimpered, for could the feel of Demyan inside ever lose its wonder?

To be honest, I struggled along even when I thought I would give up a few times…..I had to know the conclusion to this love story!!!!

I was somewhat surprised…… photo 3fa71625-f157-46dc-b960-675eb922e1a4_zpsbcc5ebeb.gif
I had to ask myself – is this book written by this author? I’ve read other books by her and none of them have been anything remotely like this one. But yes, I checked the cover and it’s definitely CM!!!

Despite me not liking this book, I decided to give it a 2 star rating because I enjoyed the whole Russian rituals that Demyan’s mother followed and the scene where he goes to visit her grave in Russia.
