The Fall Up is the first book I’ve read by Aly Martinez and I am going to be reading more of hers in the future.
Told from dual 1st person POV’s, the story focuses on Levee Williams, a musician and Sam Rivers, adman turned furniture restorer, two lost people who meet each other one night on top of a bridge.
What follows is a slow beginning of a friendship that grows to love. Two people who find comfort together as the relationship continues growing.
I was totally pulled into the story at first. The mystery of Sam and Levee’s lives, the reasons for both being at that spot where they first met, what demons were they facing. I loved Sam’s determination to be with Levee, his sexiness, his kindness.
“There isn’t a woman in the world who doesn’t have demons of some sort. No matter who I end up with, it’s always going to be a struggle.” I kissed her hair again, letting it linger as if my lips were able to transfer the truth of my words. “Levee, I’d like to struggle with you.”I found Levee very likeable. Her life is spiraling out of control. You may have all the material trappings, all the fame in your life but you can still feel the loneliness and feel helpless too.
“The perpetual free fall was no match for the way he made me feel.
I was still falling at unstoppable speeds – only, in his arms, as his body claimed me without a single word spoken, I was suddenly falling…up.”
Also, the secondary characters were amazing….Henry, Levee’s friend and ex singing partner (I actually fell in love with this guy!!), Sam’s friend Ryan and sister and niece and loved how the three had a connection with Levee. Loved Sam’s mother…what a lovely woman.
So, I’m getting quite excited here….things are moving on!!! But….I’m now half-way…and something weird happens ….Levee an Sam finally discover that being together is the best thing ever…so, where’s the sizzling and intense chemistry I was expecting? Something was missing in them as a couple.
I enjoyed this book and liked the author’s writing - her characters are believable and I could relate to them. I liked the premise of the storyline of two people finding each other.
Despite my little “moan”, this is still a book worth reading.
