My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I am a great fan of Suzanne Wright since reading her Deep in Your Veins Series.
Spiral of Need is the 1st book in the Mercury Pack Series, a spinoff from her other shifter series, The Phoenix Pack, which I haven’t read yet. Although this book can be read as a standalone, I would have liked to have read the Phoenix Pack series before to know more about the characters from it that make appearances in this book. However, the author gives us quite a bit of back-story on the characters and their stories which is interwoven rather well into this book’s story.
Ally Marshall a Seer wolf-shifter, gifted with the ability to see the future finds herself in a dangerous position with her pack after being falsely accused of acts she never committed. When Cain, her closest childhood friend presently incarcerated for some infringement and unable to rescue Ally, calls on a friend to keep Ally safe until he’s released.
Derren Hudson, the Mercury Pack’s Beta wolf is not exactly happy with his friend’s request but he feels obligated to agree as he owes Cain a favor. Not only does Derren distrust all Seers but most of the Mercury Pack members as well. He has to deal with Ally’s uncertainty with the move and also convince his pack to accept her temporarily.
Despite his dislike for Ally at first, he finds himself unwillingly attracted to her.
He’s impressed with her strength and independence and the way she cares for those who are in pain.
Ally is the kind of heroine I adore! She’s caring, honest, strong, kick-ass, takes no sh@@@ from anyone and is not afraid to speak her mind and sensitive.
She’s always been a loner. She can’t be with large crowds for too long as she can pick up everyone’s future in her head, which becomes overwhelming and painful. But the more time she spends with Derren, the more she begins to like and respect him, even enjoying their time together.
The relationship between the two builds slowly as they get to know each other. The way Derren convinced or tried to for Ally to see that there is more to life…..Derren has never been the touchy and affectionate kind of guy with people, but with Ally- possessive, protective and he wants her.
“I'm keeping you, Ally Marshall." And she'd just have to accept it, because he wouldn't let her go "You're mine."
Startled and spooked by that very sincere announcement that almost sounded....binding, Ally didn't speak for a moment. "Yours?"
"All mine. You got under my skin, became my obsession. There's no going back."
She swallowed nervously. "What do you want from me?"
"Everything you have to give. And I'll get it.”
Their sexual chemistry and the build-up to finally giving in to their attraction was pretty awesome…The dialogue and banter between them and with the other characters is witty and beyond sparkly!!!!
I loved the secondary characters. They were engaging and totally appealing. I enjoyed the connection between the different packs and the sense of family and loyalty and protectiveness they feel for each other.
This was a good start to her new series and I am rather looking forward to the next book….in the meantime, I am going to get straight into the Phoenix Pack Series!!!!
