My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Crossing the Line by Barbara Elsborg, one of my most fav authors is nothing like what I was expecting.
This was not your average romance novel. No, in fact, it was a total unexpected story that shows you that nothing in life is black and white….that there are shades of grey that merge in between…..
A story where you question….what is the difference between good and bad? When both sides have a strong, justifiable reason for fighting, from an admirable and upstanding person to a person who is vicious and dangerous?
This was certainly a story that made you question a lot of your own values!
Katya, a talented musician is determined to discover who is responsible for her sister and her parents murder in Moscow. Upon receiving a tip-off, she travels to Miami, to find their killers and avenge their deaths.
Within a short time, she’s thrown into a world filled with dangerous people, who live in a world of prostitution, murder, money laundering and cruelty.
Determined to get close to Viktor Petrenko, the person she believes is responsible for her family’s murder, she takes the opportunity when Aleksei Rushin, who may know Petrenko, shows an interest in her. Despite her misgivings about Aleksei, she decides to explore that connection.
Aleksei is not exactly the kind of hero you expect. He’s involved in prostitution, money laundering and lot more.
But there seems to be something about him that pulls Katya towards him. Agreeing to his offer to live in one of his apartments doesn’t mean she will become one of his “women”….I loved her reaction when she steps into the apartment…What surprised me was Aleksei. The bad guy…….why did he show the feelings he felt? Who was this man? What laid underneath the persona he showed the world?
Aleksei is connected to Viktor Pentrenko…the most evil and cruel and heartless human being ever!!! And Katya will soon be faced with what Viktor is able to do. “Selling” Katya to the most depraved human being without Aleksei’s knowledge…she’s raped and tortured for hours, leaving her broken. Hell, the part when Aleksei tries to fix the problem was so totally emotional and flipping sad…..Katya believed that Aleksei would be her protector. The feeling growing inside her for him, believed he would always be there for her. And when he wasn’t, it totally broke her.I have to admit that I loved Aleksei. There was so much good in him despite the life he led. He tried to look after the people in his life. He did try to be a good human being. And I believe that despite what Katya felt at times, that he was not for her….…..she felt something deep for him. She cared for him.
Dark, funny, raw, gritty, scary characters, betrayals, family issues, murder, psychotic killers, lies, unexpected revelations……….you get it all. And in the midst of all this mayhem and craziness, you have two people that meet in the most unlikely way that find a connection between each other. Two people who have to fight so many battles, so many obstacles before finding their HEA.
I couldn’t put this book down. The author has written such an exciting and interesting romantic story…yes, there is romance….yes, I know, there’s a lot of other bad stuff….rape, murder, cruelty….but in the end…LOVE FINDS A WAY TO OVERCOME ALL THE BAD STUFF IN YOUR LIFE!!!!
One of my favorite quotes:
“You or Aleksei?”
Aleksei tried to rub off his gag.l
“Don’t kill your brother,” she whispered, hardly able to believe she’d said it. “Kill me.”
“Why not aleksei?”
“Because he’s all you have left. I have nothing.”
This is a fantastic romantic and suspenseful love story and I can recommend it – a lot- to anyone who loves a love story with a twist.
